Once you’ve decided that you want to teach English as a foreign language, the next step is to get your TEFL certification. There are many TESOL / TEFL certification courses out there, both in person and online. Take the time to sort out which course is going to be right for you. No matter what course you choose, the two things a TEFL Certification must have are a quality education and job search guidance.
We received our TEFL certification through International TEFL Academy (ITA). We highly recommend International TEFL Academy for anyone looking to become TEFL certified. Read on to see why ITA was the best choice for us.

Any course worth paying for must be accredited by a recognized independent body. Many schools abroad will not recognize your TEFL certification without this. Do your research to make sure the accreditation is genuine. A few top accrediting bodies include ALTE, British Council, ACCET, TQUK, the College of Teachers, and the University of Cambridge.
TEFL certification courses are available either online or in person. Either way, courses should require in-person teaching for certification. An ideal course would include at least 100 hours of educational training as well as 5-10 hours of practicum training. This might include teaching, tutoring, and observation. Classroom (including virtual classroom) based training needs to be taught by qualified instructors. You’re investing your time and money into this course. You deserve university-level instructors with real-life experience and advanced degrees.
At International TEFL Academy
International TEFL Academy is accredited by TQUK and is internationally recognized. It meets the standard requirements for 100 hours of academic work and 6 hours of practical training. Courses are offered online and in person on four continents. Click here to see their latest course schedule and locations.
Our course with ITA included 150 hours of TEFL training and 20 hours of practicum work. We received our TEFL certification online. We completed our hands-on training at our local community college. The tutors there spend their days helping immigrants and refugees build their new life in America. The teachers well trained, experienced experts in their field. My instructor had a Ph.D. in Linguistics and Matt’s had a Master’s in TEFL & Education. The course covered grammar and phonetics lessons, creating comprehensive lesson plans, and more. Be sure to take advantage of the free 2-chapter extension for Young Learners and Business English for an extra 30 hours of TEFL training!
Job Search Guidance
Be wary of TEFL certification courses that claim they provide “guaranteed” job placement. How do they guarantee it for everyone, even if you’ve got a gang tattoo on your face and haven’t showered in a month? There are no guarantees in life. Instead, look for job search guidance.
There are a million variables when teaching abroad. Every country has different rules and requirements and no two schools are created equal. You need someone to help guide you through this confusing new world so you can focus on your course (and packing). A good TEFL program will have a helpful staff that can help you select the right course and country for you and answers all your questions. Speak with alumni and read reviews to be sure that the course follows up on its promises. It is important to choose the course right for you.
At International TEFL Academy
My student affairs advisor with International TEFL Academy helped us decide to focus on moving to Taiwan. Originally, we were considering South Korea. My advisor called the Korean embassy herself to ask questions about us moving abroad as a couple. She gave us great information that helped us decide it wasn’t the right choice for us. We received a comprehensive international job search guidance manual, unlimited job placement assistance, and help writing the perfect CV and cover letter.
With the guidance from ITA, my application stood out enough to receive responses back from schools within 24 hours. Less than 48 hours after interviewing, I received generous offer letters that allowed me to be selective with my employer. I now work at one of the best language schools in Taiwan, spending my days with bright students and passionate instructors.
