Travel is fun, but it can have a significant impact on your health. Where I teach in Taiwan, there’s about a 50% chance that the day after a teacher’s vacation, they’ll call out sick. Make sure you take care of your body and stay healthy while traveling with these 5 quick and easy tips below.
I’m a foodie, so half the reason I travel is to try the new local foods. Don’t deny yourself, but keep everything in moderation. I’d eat my weight in pasta and rice if I could! Instead, I try to keep it to 1-2 meals a day and focus on protein and produce in my meals. Don’t forget to fuel up for your adventures. Make sure you eat a good breakfast and pack snacks of fruit or vegetables for throughout the day. It’s a great excuse to treat yourself to the local in-season produce at the nearby farmer’s markets.
Explore the city on foot or by bike. It’s great exercise and is truly the best way to see any new city. Get lost wandering new streets and take the time to poke your nose into local shops and restaurants. Head out of the city and check out the local nature on a hike or biking trail. Buy an activity tracker before your departure and make it a competition with your travel buddies! If you’re traveling alone, take pride in seeing those step counts climb!
Traveling is tiring work. There’s so much to do and so much to see, but make sure you have the energy to do it. Lack of sleep leads to a variety of mental stresses, including depression and anxiety. When you’re traveling, you need to keep your brain focused to stay safe and enjoy your surroundings. Stay well rested and you’ll enjoy your vacation more and be able to get back to real life faster afterward.
I love a bar crawl as much as the next person, but when you’re in a new city or country make sure you stay safe. Stay together with your group, and if you’re traveling alone make sure you have safe and reliable transportation home at the end of the night. Always keep your safety in mind, and never drive if you’ve been drinking. Remember everything in moderation. And don’t forget to hydrate!
While traveling, carry a refillable water bottle with you at all times. We love BPA-free Hydro Flask bottles to keep drinks cool all day. New climates and elevations can make you more dehydrated than your hometown. You’ll also need more hydration for all that extra walking you’ll be doing. If you’re ever unsure of the quality of the local tap water, use bottled. Are you traveling to somewhere more remote where bottled water may be harder to come by? Bring some water purification tablets or a UV purification tool.
